The problem is, real people buy sex, and real people sell sex. The numbers on how many people are involved in the sex trade are notoriously hard to gather, or trust, but there is one constant: buyers are not buying people. When politicians, social service providers and celebrity philanthropists insist that sex workers are selling ourselves, they engage in the same kind of dehumanisation that they claim johns do to us. When they claim that men can buy us, they rob us of our power and our choices.

If you’re someone whose understanding of the sex trade is patched together from cable specials like these, with their endless reels of women in miniskirts and fishnets and boots leaning into cars, it’s probably impossible to imagine that sex workers have power or choices. From reading prostitution advertisements online, or from recalling the kind of carnival sideshow pitch you might hear at a strip club, it’s tempting to imagine that sex workers will do whatever men pay them to do, and that sex workers exist to cater to male desire. What sex workers are actually selling is our ability to make our customers think they are getting what they want, and we try to sell that with as little strain on our time and our bodies as possible. You wouldn’t be able to tell this from sex trade ads because it would be incredibly bad marketing, but it’s the illusion around which sex work turns.

A former Bronx prostitute became the first American citizen to have her prostitution convictions thrown out under New York’s sex-trafficking law.

Leni Johnson, 22, had her convictions dismissed Wednesday after Bronx prosecutors agreed she was forced into the sex trade at age 13. The new state law recognizes child hookers as victims of sex trafficking rather than criminals - and allows their convictions for prostitution to be vacated.

“I feel very relieved and really happy,” Johnson told the Daily News. “Now I can go and apply for anything without having to worry about anything coming up, and people judging me. This has been really hard on me.”

ALEXANDRIA, Va. – Alonso Bruno Cornejo, aka “Casper,” 22, of Fairfax, Va., pled guilty this morning to sex trafficking teenage runaways to work in his juvenile prostitution business that serviced clients throughout Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland.

Neil H. MacBride, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Ronald Hosko, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, made the announcement after the plea was accepted by United States District Judge Claude M. Hilton.

After a hard day’s work, you’ve probably heard someone say something along the lines of “slavery’s dead.” But, is it really dead? Most people hear slavery and immediately think of African-Americans, shackles, cotton fields, and the deep south. But, the reality is that different forms of slavery existed all over the world way before the United States was even founded and still exists today in the form of human trafficking.According to the Polaris Project, 27 million people in the world are affected by human trafficking. 1 million children a year are bought, transported, and sold as sex slave each year. In Cambodia alone, there are 33,000 child sex workers and, according toUNICEF, up to 1,500 Guatemalan babies and children are trafficked each year. And, contrary to popular belief, human trafficking is not just a problem in developing countries. Brothels are a huge issue in London. And as a transit and destination country for human traffickers, the United States is occupied by up to 17,500 human traffic victims a year. In fact, just four years ago, the Pollard family in Pennsylvania was arrested for holding 19-year-old Emily Nicely as a slave.
